Spun Bamboo: The Sustainable Material for Elegant Home Decor

Spun bamboo, an 800-year-old Vietnamese invention, is a fascinating creative technique used in crafting bamboo-made products. This traditional method has deep-rooted cultural significance and is an integral part of Vietnam's handicraft industry. In this article, we will dig deep into the process of Spun Bamboo production, from the preparation of bamboo material to the spinning process, finishing techniques, and its diverse applications.

SPUN BAMBOO – A RENEWABLE AND ECO PRODUCT

Bamboo is naturally found in Vietnam and is cultivated in both the highlands and delta regions of the country. Bamboo is known for its rapid growth, allowing it to be harvested every 3 to 5 years.

Bamboo is widely recognized as a sustainable and environmentally friendly resource. After bamboo is harvested, the remaining portion of the cut stem is left in the ground, enabling the rapid growth of a new bamboo plant. This entire growth cycle restarts automatically without requiring extensive care or attention.

SPUN BAMBOO PREPRODUCTION

  • Bamboo Selection: The bamboo used for spun bamboo is typically cut at the knot, leaving a segment of about 70 to 80 cm in length. This convenient size allows it to be easily transported to the handicraft villages.

  • Soaking in Water-Mud Mixture: Upon arrival at the village, the bamboo is placed in a water-mud mixture for approximately 90 days. This extended soaking process serves several crucial purposes:

  • Sugar Content Removal: It effectively removes the sugar content from the bamboo, making it more durable and resistant to damage.

  • Mold Prevention: Soaking in mud for this duration prevents the bamboo from developing mold , ensuring its long-lasting quality.

  • Insect Infestation Control: The treatment also helps control bamboo from insect infestation, ensuring that the material remains pest-free.

  • Drying in Sunlight: After the soaking process, the bamboo is removed from the water-mud mixture and left to dry in the natural sunlight. This step prepares the material for the subsequent stages of spun bamboo production.

SPUN BAMBOO SPINNING

The core of spun bamboo production is the expertise of local artisans who skillfully transform bamboo into various functional forms. Here is the breakdown of the process:

  • Bamboo Splitting & Cutting: Once the bamboo is completely soaked and dried, it is carefully split and cut into smaller pieces. The specific dimensions of these cut bamboo pieces will be determined by their intended purpose and desired shapes.

  • Bamboo Shaping: Specialized machinery is used to transform bamboo pieces into round shapes, which are then bent and glued together. Typically, this is done while the pieces are in a flat form.

  • Forming the desired shape: The round shapes are bent or pulled over ceramic or wooden molds to achieve the required size and shape.

  • Gluing and drying: The bamboo pieces are dipped in a glue mixture again and left to dry, typically in a designated drying room to maintain a moisture level of around 6 to 8%.

This entire spinning process, along with gluing and drying, typically takes place within the households of the spun bamboo handicraft village.

How the Spun Bamboo Bases are Finished

Once the base of spun bamboo products is finalized, the raw bases are usually transported to a larger factory for completion. The purpose of this step is primarily to centralize the management of painting, quality assurance, and packaging within a more extensive facility.

The production of spun bamboo involves a significant amount of manual labor and hand sanding. Most of the steps in the process require manual execution. Similar to numerous other Vietnamese manufacturing processes, spun bamboo is meticulously sanded multiple times to ensure a highly smooth surface.

Here are some of the basic steps used to finish spun bamboo products:

  • Clay is applied to the bases: Clay is placed on the spun bamboo base where the lacquer will be painted, followed by sun drying and sanding between coats.

  • Applying lacquer onto the prepared bases: Depending on the finish, multiple layers of lacquer will be applied to the surface. Lacquer paint can be used in various colors and can achieve either a shiny or matte finish.

  • Spun bamboo products can also be stained to highlight natural patterns or left in their natural color.

  • Spun Bamboo can be used as a base for various lacquer finishes and even mother-of-pearl finishes: In certain cases, like crafting large lacquer bowls, spun bamboo is used to achieve the desired bowl shape in a more cost-effective way. These bowls are entirely coated in lacquer, leaving no visible sections of the spun bamboo.
